Guest Playlist - Existential Bubblegum 8
Here is an exclusive Spotify playlist from ‘invite only’ audio zine Existential Bubblegum, this installment being available to all and sundry, yourself included. Over to our selectah…
Existential Bubblegum started as a phrase in my head for about 5 years, nominally a name for the kind of music I like to listen to, thought provoking, yet dumb and disposable as beechnut.
Then it became and still is an audio zine I mail out to certain friends who find it hard to rake through the overwhelming multi media desert we live in to find the rough diamonds.
The latest installment, A boy riding a cow thru a candy store, I have compiled for Inaudible Answer, and its name is in tune with the ever expanding horizon from which to source music, shampoo, sea monkeys etc. Its purloined from a review of Smog’s ‘The doctor came at dawn’, who drew a parallel to Bill Callahan as the said boy atop bovine stock.
There are way too many sweetie jars out there yielding mostly sugary shite. I hope this culled mix has some sugar, some spite and some magic……

Tracklist
Sun Ra ‘Night of the Purple Moon’ What everyone wanted from the recent stint at Café Oto, instead of the Duke Ellington insane asylum big band. Im happy with either…………
Del Shannon ‘Its My Feeling’ A psych lite offering from Loog Oldhams time with Delstar, almost summer fun in the encroaching winter…..
Gary War ‘See Right Thru’ Finally, some ones been listening to the Associates and gets the residue of their macabre suave soul………
Rain Machine ‘Give Blood’ Stripped of Sitek gloss from the last Tv ont Radio lp, Kip Malone shows himself to be the dark star of the outfit.
Georgia Anne Muldrow ‘Kwanza’ Imagine Kelis with more imagination….
John Cale ‘King Harry’ Way way ahead of his time, we will all be in our dotage before the world catches up
Acid Mothers Temple ‘Close encounters of the electric spirits’ Still happily ripping the piss out of all genres and making great freak out music by default……….
Mabuses ‘The gibbon walk’ One of the great lost bands, one of the great last signings to Rough Trade’s final stand. I demand an ATP re-union show…..
Lovvers ‘100 Flowers’ In the canyons of my mind I have a notion the Swell Maps make it to the states, sign to SST, get produced by Spot and go on to infleunce a generation. Lovvers, along with No Age, are the inheritors.
Kid Congo Powers Bad seeds/Gun Club sideman still hammering the cramps…
Tune Yards ‘Hatari’. Simply barmy, simply brilliant as a consequence. That Voice..
Circulatory System ‘Round again’ Basically a reformed Olivia Tremor Control under a new moniker, bravely fronted by the ailing genius that is Will Cullen Hart, one of the highlights of ATP NYC, and from their best record since ‘Dusk at Cubist Castle’.
Grass Widow ‘Tattoo’ Giving the Vivian Girls a run for their money
Hope Sandoval ‘Blanchard ‘ Vic Reeves style pant rubbing at the mere mention of her name, here the coo-ing fawnette shows she can still drop an army of geeks with a bat of the lashes.
Ecstatic Sunshine ‘Anagram’ No bombs, no fucks, just Cluster redrawn for hardcore echoplex geetar …..
Wavves ‘Rainbow Everwhere’. Fuzz Buzz a diddle it….
Deerhunter ‘Disapearring Ink’ The top pop ep of 2009, nuff said
Raekwon et al ‘New Wu’ Maybe not that new, but the best summit for the clansmen in an age, and for me the standout tune of the year……..
Flaming Lips ‘Silver Trembling Hands ‘ & ‘ Virgo self esteem broadcast’. Two inseparable gems from the latest lips lp, their best in decade, and for this punter potentially the album of the year. You wont be hearing these at a funeral anytime soon ……
